The world renown Royal Horticultural Society give there advice on honey fungus and a sensible paragraph or two on tree stumps.

A lot of things can be said to almost force you to have a stump removed, Honey Fungus is the big one. Some Tree stump removal companies try to scare you into having a stump removed intimating that it will cure your Honey fungus problem. Honey fungus can be very scary when you first think you might have it, but like any adversary you have to get to know about it. Although stump grinding can help by taking away or reducing a potential food source, we will not spin you any yarns but will point you to some links to good, reliable sources of information about Tree stumps and Honey fungus and are more than happy to give our advice over the phone or in person..
